Biography

Andrew Nutton is a photographic artist who works primarily in the human-affected landscape and with ideas of the experiential and of ‘picturing’ place; a photographic practice formed in the documentary and social-landscape traditions, he engages with and produces work which is in conversation with contemporary art practices and broader environmental concerns.

His current project ‘Latitudes of the Longitude’ (2023) is concerned with the following and photographing around the sites of the zero-degree line of longitude, the GMT, in England. The project is absorptive in nature – research, geographies, geo-political history, and the experiences of walking are all vital to the artistic response of making the invisible ‘visible’ through photographic encounter.

Exploring and photographing the modern human-affected landscapes as we come to encounter them is vital to his practice as is the research into the history and topics around them. This extends to the existential themes and threats around the environment at large and the global political climate that is tremulously balanced.

A collaborator with couture-artist Noki, Andrew has photographed and documented London fashion week & ‘Sustainability’ Night at London’s Victoria & Albert museum. His work has been exhibited in Brighton, London, and Barcelona.

Mainly working with 6×7 Colour Negative, C-Type RA4 and Archival Pigment Prints, he produces fine art prints of outstanding quality both for gallery exhibitions and for collectors. 2023 marked the production of his first Artist’s book which stems from the long-form project ‘Latitudes of the Longitude’, which concerns the concept and journeying of the invisible ‘zero-degree’ line of longitude in England.

Andrew has been making photographic projects in the landscape since 1999, as a BA Student at the University of Brighton. After time working as a freelance photographer in events and in fashion portraiture, in 2021 he returned to the University of Brighton to study a Masters degree in Photography, completing in 2023.

He lives in Brighton & Hove, UK with his bonsai Oak tree.
